How to Choose the Right Demulsifier: From Chemistry to Field Performance

In oil production, few steps are as critical as the separation between oil and water. The emulsion formed during extraction must be efficiently broken so that the crude meets sales and transportation specifications, and downstream processes operate without interruptions.

The challenge is that there is no magic formula. Each well, each field, each recovery method produces emulsions with unique characteristics—and this is exactly where choosing the right demulsifier makes all the difference.

The challenge of oil-water separation in complex operations

Emulsions in oil production are formed in different ways depending on the type of field and the extraction method used. Factors such as the presence of fine particles, salts, organic compounds, asphaltenes, and resins directly influence emulsion stability.

Offshore fields, for example, deal with high pressure and seawater intrusion, while onshore fields face temperature and salinity variations that affect emulsion stability.

For the formulator, this means that understanding the crude oil composition is the first step. Parameters such as API gravity, SARA profile (saturates, aromatics, resins, and asphaltenes), BS&W (basic sediments and water), and salinity are essential to guide the selection of the chemical package.

Why there is no “universal” demulsifier

One of the biggest challenges faced by formulators and production engineers is finding a formulation that works consistently under real conditions. Attempting to use a single product for different wells or operational conditions rarely works.

Correct selection requires a data-driven approach: detailed emulsion analysis, comparative testing, and the right combination of demulsifier bases. This is where technical knowledge and a broad portfolio make the difference.

The performance of a separation system does not depend on a single product, but on an integrated chemical strategy. The most advanced formulations combine three main functionalities:

Dropper (Primary Break)

The primary demulsifier, responsible for the initial breaking of the emulsion. It acts at the oil-water interface, disrupting the interfacial film surrounding water droplets and promoting droplet coalescence and water separation. Products such as ULTROIL® EB 1030 stand out in this role, especially in heavy oils and stable emulsions.

Treater (Secondary Treatment)

Following the initial emulsion break, the treater enhances separation efficiency by removing dispersed water from the oil phase. The KEMELIX® 3515X line is a reference at this stage, combining separation efficiency with thermal stability.

Dryer (Final Polishing)

Responsible for removing residual traces of water, ensuring that the oil meets pipeline, storage, or refinery specifications. Products such as KEMELIX® D501, D503 and D510 are fine examples of polishing chemistry, optimized to remove very fine residual water (microemulsion or finely dispersed water).

The smart combination of these three functions in a customized formulation reduces total chemical consumption, improves separation efficiency, and extends the lifespan of process equipment.

The importance of the bottle test in proper selection

The bottle test is the most reliable and widely used method for selecting demulsifiers. The procedure involves:

  • Collection of representative emulsion samples
  • Bottle preparation with different chemical formulations and dosages
  • Measurement of water separation over time
  • Evaluation of interface quality, oil clarity, and residual water content

According to SPE technical literature available through OnePetro, confirms that the bottle test remains the standard tool for initial screening, followed by field validation. The methodology allows quick comparison of different formulations and concentrations before any full-scale application.

Effective demulsifier selection goes beyond improving separation efficiency; it also contributes to equipment reliability, lower operating costs, and overall production performance.

How to accelerate from selection to field performance

The most efficient path to selecting the optimal demulsifier follows three steps:

  • Emulsion characterization — Analysis of API, SARA, BS&W, salinity, and field temperature
  • Bottle test with a broad portfolio — Combined testing of droppers, treaters, and dryers to identify the ideal synergy
  • Field validation — Fine-tuning dosage and monitoring performance

The broader the range of chemistries available during testing, the higher the probability of finding the right combination more quickly. That is why Indovinya continuously invests in R&D and expands its KEMELIX®, ULTROIL® EB, and SURFONIC® OFD lines.

FAQs (People Also Ask)

What is a demulsifier and what is it used for?

A demulsifier is a production chemical used to break oil-water emulsions, enabling efficient phase separation and improving crude oil quality.

The bottle test is the industry standard method: representative emulsion samples are collected in the field, transferred to conical tubes or 100-milliliter graduated-type bottles, and subjected to different demulsifiers at varying dosages. The water separation rate is measured to identify the most effective formulation.

Droppers are primary demulsifiers that promote the initial breaking of the emulsion. Treaters enhance separation efficiency during secondary treatment or refining separation. Dryers pprovide final polishing by removing residual water and ensuring export-quality crude.

Because crude oil composition varies widely (API gravity, SARA, water content, salinity, temperature). Each oilfield has its own chemical characteristics that require customized formulations.

This portfolio covers the three key functions (dropper, treater, dryer) with different solutions, allowing formulators to quickly test combinations and find the ideal synergy for each operational scenario.
